So now that you have a better understanding of what project management is, what is a project?

First, it is important to understand the difference between operational work and project work.

• Operational work everything you do to keep the business running.
• Project work is specific to a project.

Okay – operational work is maintaining the business. So a project, then is temporary. It is intended to bring about change in an organization. Projects can vary in size and duration. But, regardless of all the factors that contribute to a project, it has to end.

It’s important for a project to end for many reasons.

• You will have a budget to complete only the work in the Charter.
• By extension, your budget also includes monies to pay for resources (both people and systems) to complete the work.
• When a project ends, it is moved to operations. Generally the people who will manage and support the product will be different than the project team.
